Thanks for the advice Ladylilo. I need all the information I could get for this cruise. I feel so much better traveling with the kids after reading everyone's messages. My family has never taken a long vacation. We only did Weekend vacations to the snow and that was fun to them, since we live in sunny California

The great thing about cruising with kids is, in my opinion, that they can't get lost! There is nowhere for them to go where they could get lost and there are plenty of crew members around all the time.

One other piece of advice that I would like to give is for you to read the trip reports on TD for the Disney Cruise. I found this really informative, even more than from the official web sites (unless of course you want everything to be a complete surprise!).

Hope you have a fantastic time (you will!) Lucky thing!

I have just realised that you are doing the West Coast cruise and so I guess the trip reports won't help much!! Are going on Disney Magic? Please post a trip report when you get back (I know its a while off yet) 'cause I would really like to hear about it. I don't really know very much about the West Coast cruise. It was mentioned when we were away but didn't really pay much attention. How many stops do you have? Is it for 7 days?

We are going on the Disney Wonder. From my understanding the ships are the same I was told. It's a one time offer for the summer of 2005. Disney sailed there Wonder ship to California for Disney's 50th Anniversary. It's for seven days and we will go to Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas (Mexico). It will be the exact cruise but different islands. Too bad I won't be able to visit Castaway Cay, But it's okay, I am pretty sure we will still have as much fun as everyone else did on the cruise. I just found out about it last month and quickly booked b/c they were selling out fast. I will definetly let everyone know how the trip was when we get back. Unfortunetly, the ship will sail back to Florida and there will not be another Disney Cruise in California. I ask several times if they were sure they werent doing the WEST COAST cruise again next year because i was not ready to pay that much for a trip in 4 months. We leave August 13 and the money is due in May.

Jaycee, we went on the 4 day cruise February 13-17 with our two sons ages 7 and one that turned 4 during the trip. They loved every single second of it (well, except for the life boat drill) and can't wait to go on another Disney Cruise. The Oceaneer's club and it's staff were fabulous. We signed the boys up before the ship set sail and were given an Oceaneer's Club itinerary (Navigator) and a pager for the trip. We let the kids pick and choose what activities they'd like to do, and checked them in during those times. The system is very secure...the kids wore wrist bands with their names on it and each time they went, they had to be checked in via the computer. At check out, you had to get the children, go to the check out area and give them your name, room number, and a pre-selected password (chosen at registration). Only those listed on the registration could pick up the boys (we were with other family members that were on our consent form). The club was always clean and they kids were given soap every time they checked in and showed to the sinks to wash their hands. (Automatic Purell dispensers were also located at meal locations and getting on/off the ship. Every single person was also given an antibacterial wipe to cleanse their hands before boarding the ship for the first time.) The activities are really age appropriate and the kids couldn't wait to go for whatever they chose. Our 7 year old got to be a "pirate" with Captain Hook, play basketball and make flubber and participate in water olympics at Castaway Cay. Our 3-4 year old got to do-si-do with Snow white, have tea with Wendy and also make flubber and do other arts and crafts. At Castaway Cay, they had tons of sand toys for the kids to use at the club area. There is also a great swing set/rope area in the ocean for older kids to use. At times, my husband and I stayed around to check up on the boys, and the staff was more than happy to let us in to watch. Parents are allowed in at any time, and can stay for activities. I chose to stay and take some pictures of the boys with the characters. There are tons of opportunities through out the day to take character pictures and get autographs as well. The navigator has the times select characters will be in the atrium, at the goofy pool and so on. They also have a phone number you can call to get the locations/times. These lines tend to get long, but go quite fast. We'd spent a week at Sea world, Universal and the Disney parks and the boys never got tired of wanting more autographs.
As for knowing if your kids are ready for the club...Do they go to pre-school or school? Our 3-4 year old goes twice a week to pre school and we told him it would be sort of like that experience. We also used the DVD and a travel channel taped video to show them where the Oceaneer's club was located and such. We also told them if at any time they wanted to leave, to page us (that never happened). We probably had them enrolled maybe 3 hours each day through out the trip. I did hear one family arguing with their son that did not want to go telling him he had no choice. I felt really bad for that child because it was if the family was using it for all day daycare (we were in Nassau and the parents were leaving the son there while they went off the ship) I think if you make it something fun and not act like they are going to be missing something that you will be doing is also key. The staff did a great job consoling any child that cried and if they cried too much, the parents were paged.
The crew also put on a fantastic "graduation" the last day for all the D(isney) Sea U(niversity) alumni (Oceaneer's Club/Lab visitors)in the Walt Disney Theater. They produced a great slide tape show and gave the kids Mickey Mouse ears/graduation cap and Alumni t-shirts they got to keep. Mickey and Minnie came to help move their tassles. I would highly recommend checking them in to the club well before the listed time for this. Our boys were in the club for the activity before and when we passed by to check on them, the line to check in at that time was probably 200 people long. They must have had 400 kids on the stage that day.
The kids also liked swimming in the pools, but they tended to be way too crowded, especially the first and last days (out to sea). The wait staff were also wonderful to the kids. Dinners tended to last almost 2 hours, and the kids never got bored. The waiters entertained them with magic/napkin tricks and they were also given crayons/activity page. Tthe Pirates of the Carribbean night was especially fun for them.

Wow!!! Hanover if I didn't make my deposit on the trip already, I will definelty be sold right now after reading the great time your family had. I feel so much better about the kids program......I had this terrible nightmare that someone was mean and threw a child over board But i woke up and I am okay now I can't believe the line was that long. So your saying If there's an activity at 2:00pm I should check the kids in around 1:00pm? Does the programs get filled quickly? I know the nursery does but I was not sure if the Club/Lab get filled fast. 3 hours each day for the kids was good I think I may do the same. My husband is so concerned about having our quiet Adult time. So did you and your husband (assuming your a women, not sure with your name Hanover. go to the adult areas? How was that.? were going for 7 days. Thanks again for the information. I printed your message and put it in my Disney Cruise folder.

Forgot to include that I really hate that we will miss the Castaway Cay adventure because were going on the WEST COAST cruise. Your kids really had fun there. I will bring some fun things for the kids to play when we go to the beach. The excursions sound good and my family is so much fun. I am pretty sure next year will be our trip to WDW and the Disney Cruise.

Hi Jaycee,
First yes, I am a woman, my name is Danielle. Hanover is where I live and all the other names I tried had already been used.
I'm sorry I wasn't clear on that response about the line... it was only the line before they began the "Celebrate the Journey" party at 5 PM on our last night. They had a "Prep time " at 4:10 to 4:40 PM where the kids got their graduation t-shirts and caps and were lined up to march into the theater. We checked them in about 4:00 and we really beat the crowd that was coming in to sign their kids up. It literally ran outside the lab and around the corner and around another corner. At any other time I think about the most crowded I saw the club was 40 to 50 kids (the 3-4 and 5-7 groups combined). This was after our dinner (we had 6:00 seating and got out about 8:00) and they put down covered nap mats and let the kids settle down and watch movies. I'm not sure how many kids were kept there after that time because we only put our boys in one evening and got them around 9:30. It looked like several had fallen asleep. The club stayed open until 1AM, so they might have been there while their parents did their own thing. The cruise offered a lot of night time family dance parties and things that the kids wanted to go to, but they fell asleep each night except the Pirates of the Carribbean night (that was a ton of fun). The club staff did a great job of keeping the kids all occupied and happy. I didn't see any kids look bored, argue or fight at all the entire trip. Most of the time there were probably between 15 and 30 kids in the 3-4 and 20 to 30 in the 5-7 group.
My husband and I did go to the adult pool a couple times when our kids were at the club. It was the least crowded pool at any time on our trip. When I took my 7 year old to the Goofy Family Pool on Friday, I counted 43 people in the pool at that time. He had enough space to doggie paddle around, but that was about it. The Mickey Mouse pool was even more crowded. There are 2 black "ears" that are maybe 10 feet diameter. One is for kids 3 and up and maybe 2 feet deep and the other just has a sprinkler going for non-potty trained kids. The 3 and up one must have had 25 kids crammed in it. I was worried my youngest would go down under someone and I wouldn't see him because of the amount of kids, so I stayed within an arm length watching him. Of course he loved it even though he had about 3 other kids arms and legs over him at all times. There is another deeper portion of the Mickey pool and that seemed less crowded. I think it went up to 3 1/2 feet deep. The slide which was at the Mickey Pool area was also a favorite of my 7 year old and that didn't get too crowded...maybe 15 to 20 kids in line at the most. The hot tubs at the adult pool were about half full through out our trip and at the goofy pool it was always full. The lounge chairs were always taken at each of the pools every time we tried to get one except when we had just boarded.
My husband and I also went to the adult beach at Castaway Cay. It was absolutely gorgeous. You take a quick tram to get there. We let the kids play with the club from about 10:00 until lunch. We had not brought any sand toys and were going to purchase them there (they were $16 for a bucket with a couple little things) and then someone told us they had tons of sand toys in the club area. They really did have tons, so we didn't end up buying any. We got the boys for lunch and then stayed at the family beach until we had to leave for boarding. You can leave the kids in during lunch and dinner and they are taken to a buffet (our oldest son went once during lunch and said there was a lot of kid friendly food)
If you go to Nassau, I highly recommend the Blue Lagoon dolphin encounter. It was well worth every cent. The kids loved it and it was 100% better than the one my husband and I did in Cozumel in November. They even had wet suits (the water was rather chilly) and provided lunch. We could also use the beach area and could rent different water craft. The ferry ride was about 40 minutes to and from the cruise ship.
In terms of "adult" time you can have as little or as much time as you want with full confidence the kids are safe and happy (or sleeping!) at the club. We got to see a movie (National Treasure), see an "adult" comedian and hang out with our relatives and relax during our trip (no one else with us had young kids).
I had a friend that went on the cruise last November and said there was no way she was going to put her kids in the club because they wanted " family time" because she works full time. She ended up doing it and the kids loved it. I didn't think of it as babysitting, but as something fun and fulfilling for them. I thought it really enhanced my kids trip and they still talk about how much they loved the Oceaneer's club and how they can't wait to go on another cruise. Only next time we are doing the 7 day cruise and skipping the week at the parks (maybe we'll squeeze in a couple parks).
I also posted a response to your sea sickness question about our experience.
I hope you have a great cruise. I wish I was going again soon!

Thanks Danielle, i have been reading your posts with great interest! We go on the 4 day cruise in April and have a 6 year old and an almost 4 year old. Not to mention the rest of my family's kids so hearing you accounts of the kids programs has been very helpful, especially the stuff about castaway cay, I really wanted at least a few hours on the adult beach while we are there so it's good to hear the fun our children will be having while we are relaxing!! As far as the graduation thing was that only for your older child or did your 4 year participate as well? Thanks Holly

Hi Holly,
The graduation ceremony was for any child that had ever participated in any activity in the Oceaneer's club/lab the entire trip. I thought there would be maybe 100 kids and when they kept coming in from all directions to the stage and lining up and lining up I couldn't believe how many there were. I hadn't seen that many kids the whole trip, not even in line to meet the characters or at the pools! My son that turned 4 was in the first of 4 lines of 3 to 4 year olds, sitting down and there must have been 30 to 40 in a line (sitting across the stage) and I'd bet there were 8 or so rows of the older groups standing. They had a great song playing and a tape show playing pictures through out the week of different kids involved in camp activities. It was so cute to see them all in their t-shirts and Mickey Mouse ear graduation cap. Then Mickey and Minnie came in dressed in a graduation cap and gown and showed them how to move their tassles. Everything from start to finish was about a half hour long. The club staff took the kids back to the club, and they had 3 lines of check out (there was usually only 1) so that made things a breeze picking them up. I really can't emphasize just how wonderful the whole experience was. We are already looking to book a trip for spring or summer 2006. After going with Disney, I doubt we'll ever cruise with another cruise line ever again.
The adult beach at Castaway Cay is very nice. There is a bar there and a place to get lunch. I think it had the same food as the main area except that it didn't have the ribs (we went back and had lunch at the main area with the boys). The adult beach was quite empty...probably about 20% of the seats taken if that. It was so quiet! The crew beach is nearby and it was nice to see that at least some of them get a well deserved break. The water was this beautiful aqua color at Castaway Cay and you could see crystal clear through the water to the bottom of the sand a long way out. The temperature was in the high 70's and sunny (gorgeous!), but the water was rather chilly. Over at the family beach, it was really, really crowded and we had a hard time finding lounge chairs. The water had a ton of people in it (most of our extended family went snorkeling) but it wasn't over crowded. Our kids didn't seem to mind the cold water, and we did eventually get used to it.
I only wished that the ship stayed there 2 days. (we are thinking of going on the Western Caribbean one next year that does)

Jacee,

We just took our first cruise with disney and as a family trip. My son just turned 7. It was great. We have already booked for 2006. Yes I was also nervous about signing my child in an leaving him.. It was okay. We just signed him up at the beginning of the cruise and he picked which things he wanted to go to. No one will let them out of their site. No one can pick them up without an ID and password. It has a great playground and supervised activities. Hint. there is program for each age group. the one with the white gloves beside the name will defentaly have characters there. My son was somewhat dispointed that buzz lightyear did not show up but I learned very quickly which one the characters would be at. He was by himself and this helped him make friends at the programs and at the pool. They quickly made friends and saw each other all over the boat. Any other questions you can post here. A worried mother traveler also.

Patty

Jacee. we just go back from eastern on the magic. It was great. I posted a long message to you. I am not sure if it went through. I am a type a Mother and I was also very caution about leaving my child. He had a ball. He picked which one to go to. When we arived to check in at the disney terminal we could sign up even before we got on the ship. Get a beeper and use it as much or little as you like. Have some alone time while the kids are having theirs.
Patty

Hi has anyone used the Secret porthole rooms we booked for next year 2006 in 5524 does any one know about this room?

No one can pick them up without an ID and password. It has a great playground and supervised activities. Hint. there is program for each age group. the one with the white gloves beside the name will defentaly have characters there. My son was somewhat dispointed that buzz lightyear did not show up but I learned very quickly which one the characters would be at. He was by himself and this helped him make friends at the programs and at the pool. They quickly made friends and saw each other all over the boat. Any other questions you can post here. A worried mother traveler also.

Jacee. we just go back from eastern on the magic.

Well we just got back from the 3 night cruise last week. I have a 6 year old son and a almost 4 year old daughter. We used the kid's club and felt very comfortable, our kids only went sporatically for the events they picked out and 2 times they paged us to come and get them. Our daughter seemed to enjoy it a little more than our son I think because his age group had more kids in it and things were a little more crazy. The day they enjoyed them the most was at Castaway Cay they got to play in the sand and dig for dinosaur bones. We enjoyed having them with us for alot of the things to do like the dinner at Animators Palate and the Shows in the evening so we chose to use them more in the late morning or early afternoon. It is a nice break for an hour or so to just relax by the pool or walk the shops. Hope this helps. PS their paging system works really well and we never had an issue of not getting a page or anything.

Thanks Holly. I'm the same way with the kids. I want them to go to the the different dinning areas and the theatres also with us. I guess the first day on the cruise will be me making an iternary for the family. Do you get the schedule of events before your cruise or do you receive it when you arrive.

You get them when you board I suggest going directly to your room and then to deck 5 for the kid's clubs to register. That way you get their itinery as well and can compare them to the navigator and what you want to do as a family. When you register you are given a pager for the entire trip and your kids are given a wristband for the entire trip that has their information on it so when you check them each time it goes smoothly. Have Fun.

Although you get the Children's club navigator for the whole week, you only get the general one on a daily basis. So although you could plan what the children want to do for the whole week, this is not so easy if there are things you all want to do as a family. Don't worry about it too much though because there is a good variety of activities everyday. Your dining will be at the same time every night, as will the theatre shows.

It is advisable to register the children at the club ASAP as this time is very busy (obviously with all the families doing the same), but remember that you are not able to get access to your room until 1:30 pm. However, I think that there is usually a copy of the navigator on display at the Guest Relations desk that you could look at if necessary.
