While returning to port at the end of a four-day Bahamian cruise, crewmembers of the Disney Wonder rescued a 34-year-old man who had gone overboard from the Carnival Sensation.
Passengers aboard the Sensation witnessed the man jumping overboard from his balcony stateroom around 11:15 p.m. on Sept. 2, according to a statement released by Carnival Cruise Lines.
When the call for help went out from the Carnival Sensation, the Disney Wonder was the closest ship able to help, said Christi Erwin Donnan, manager of public affairs for Disney cruise lines.
Four Disney Wonder cruise members pulled the passenger aboard a rescue boat and brought him aboard the Disney Wonder around 12:45 a.m., Sept. 3, said Ms. Donnan.
"He was yelling for help, so he was easy to spot. The Wonder was pleased to respond and we are extremely proud of the crew," said Ms. Donnan.
The man remained aboard the Wonder and was brought to Port Canaveral.
Both ships make berth at Port Canaveral.
The U.S. Coast Guard also assisted in the search for the overboard passenger.

Re: Disney Wonder rescues overboard cruise passenger
The local newspapers here in Miami and Ft Lauderdale said he was arguing with his wife and said he was going to jump. She told him to go ahead. Well at least he listened to her! The paper first said the Disney ship picked him up and then transfered him to another smaller boat and he was taken to Miami. WRONG! Then they changed the article. He was picked up by the Disney ship after the Sensations rescue boat capsized and the rescue crew returned to the Sensation. Disney Ship had it together and launched their own rescue crew and boat. They picked him up and brought him on their own ship. I wonder if alcohol was involved and if the lovely couple is still together at this time?

All I can say is WOW!!! Hooray for Disney Wonder and its amazing crew! But OMG!! Jumping overboard is a bit much! I pray they are not together... that is definately a toxic relationship!!!
Scary at the same time! DH and I are going to cruise the Carnival Splendor in Feb!!
I am hoping to save enough for a Disney cruise with the kiddies soon!

Here is the local papers story on it which came from the AP and Orlando Sentinel
South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com
Cruise ship plucks passenger from Atlantic
Man jumped after having argument with woman
A man rescued from the ocean Thursday by a cruise ship near Port St. Lucie jumped off his own vessel intentionally, according to a witness.
The jumper could be heard arguing with a woman on the final night of a four-day tour of The Bahamas aboard the Carnival Sensation. "He threatened to jump, and she said, 'Go ahead,' and he did," said Marie McDonald, who was vacationing from New York.
"Then we heard the man screaming, 'Help! Help!' "
About 90 minutes later, rescuers from the nearby Disney Wonder pulled the man from the water, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Nick Ameen said.
"He was fine, but he was physically exhausted," Ameen said. The jumper's name and hometown were not released.
The rescue operation began about 11:15 p.m. as the Sensation sailed toward its Port Canaveral base.
The Sensation was about 30 miles off of Port St. Lucie when witnesses heard the man jump from the balcony of a stateroom into the water, according to a statement issued by Carnival Cruise Line.
The Coast Guard sent out a helicopter and two boats, and the Sensation launched its own search.
But the Sensation's attempts made little headway, McDonald and passenger Michael Huggins of Lakeland said.
The crew launched a rescue boat, but its sailors forgot to untie it from the cruise ship, Huggins said. The rescue boat tipped, filled with water, and never joined the search, passengers said.
"I was irate," Huggins said.
A second rescue boat never launched, despite complaints of passengers, said Huggins. The Sensation's search lights were weak and crew members aimed flashlights at the water.
Carnival officials could not be reached for comment.
"For over an hour he was screaming for help," said McDonald. "We were shouting at him to hold on." The Disney Wonder was also returning to Port Canaveral and joined the search. Its crew found the jumper at 12:45 a.m., about 28 miles east of the St. Lucie Inlet.
Both cruise ships returned to the port as scheduled Thursday morning. The man was taken to a hospital for an evaluation, cruise officials said.
Re: Disney Wonder rescues overboard cruise passenger
WOW!! I hope that he was held in the psychiatric unit!! And the woman should be in the room next door! Just goes to show how ridiculous people can be!!

Re: Disney Wonder rescues overboard cruise passenger
i heard about this like 2 days ago(we are planning to bring our 3 year old and wanted to look for safety on disney ships). im suprised this was never put into major news headlines...it seems disney only makes major news channels when an injury or death is involved! i also heard that no one on carnival was trained to deal with rescues, what is up with that? and disney got everyone to be quiet on their ship unlike carnival.

It made the news here in Florida, I know thats for sure as I posted the newspaper article. Disney in todays news again saying a body was found in a tree at Disney. Well if you open the paper and read the article, a body was found hanging from a tree at the Double Tree Suites on Hotel Blvd, which is Disney property but not at Disney aka WDW. So the paper made it sound like someone hung themself at WDW. It was just on Disney property at a non Disney Hotel. But hey, Disney made the news again.....
On another note, our neighbors father was invited to a business lunch with one of the owners of the restaurants at Downtown Disney. He asked, how are you doing in this recession? A few of the owners said, "What recession? We are doing great and dont even see it at all" Even if we are in a recession, people still need to have some fun, so make it Disney!
Re: Disney Wonder rescues overboard cruise passenger
Wow. Not sure what to say other than just wow. Does anyone know if the crew members who were involved got some award or being reconized in some special way are something. If so, congratulations to the fantastic and dedicated Disney cruise crew! I hope this guy is on the right track now!
