Disney/Pixar announced their latest animated filmToy Story 3, has taken over 1st place as the highest-grossing animated movie ever released. Toy Story 3's global box office take now stands at a whopping $920 million, and that total forced Shrek 2 and its $919.8 million worldwide into second place.
Toy Story 3 also crossed the $400 million mark at the domestic box office this weekend, making it only the second Disney movie to do so. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest pulled off the feat back in 2006.
In the press release announcing Toy Story 3's new box office record, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios Rich Ross stated, "In 1995, the talented team at Pixar introduced a cowboy, a space ranger and their friends who have gone on to become some of the most beloved characters in the world. The success of Toy Story is due to the tremendously creative and innovative team at Pixar, led by John Lasseter and Ed Catmull, and our incredible marketing and distribution teams around the world. In Toy Story 3, director Lee Unkrich, producer Darla Anderson and the incredible team at Pixar have given audiences a film that continued the rich storytelling and character building that have become synonymous with every Pixar release."
Toy Story 3 will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on November 2, 2010.
