Getting in shape for the vacay

Ok I'm not sure if this topic will be an interesting one or not, but I just that since I have read about people wanting to get in shape before going on vacation (me being one of them ) I thought I would get some ideas from others who have the same goal in mind. [replacer_img]

Re: Getting in shape for the vacay

Well, I didn't really get in shape for a Disney trip, but I certainly did because of one.

After seeing my pictures / videos from my trip in August 2011, I was inspired to change my lifestyle last year and so far I've lost 70 lbs (down from 280 in 2011) I've gone from a tight 38 waist to a comfortable 36, and still going!

I did this a few ways:

    1) I cut out drinking sugary sodas at home (I still treated myself at a restaurant, but later switched to water with lemon...not for diet, but because I began to enjoy water more)

    2) I started drinking at least 8 - 10 glasses of water a day. It's a rare time you will find me without water on my desk at work or home. I don't really count them, I just sortof sip on it all day.

    3) I moved from one large meal a day to 3 smaller meals and a few snacks of apples, nuts (I love almonds), or grapes. I also made sure to eat breakfast, as I never used to. Now, I generally have a whole banana and a glass of grapefruit juice as my breakfast, along with coffee and some shortbread (a weakness of mine) at work.

    4) I started riding a bicycle everywhere I could. To work, to the grocery store, to Target to shop (carried my stuff in a backpack or in my bike trailer that I use when my kid is here). This not only helped me lose weight, but I found I was a lot more selective in my shopping when I had to bike it home 3 miles! So my food waste and overall shopping expense dropped dramatically (by nearly 40%)...

I really can't recommend any crash diets, as they mostly address water weight, and you'll think you are losing a lot quickly. I have weight loss buddies who kicked off their long term diets that way, just to get that "excitement" of feeling like you are on biggest loser, but I really think weight loss is a personal lifestyle decision. As important as caloric intake is, I think physical exercise is far more important. You don't need P-90X or anything extreme, just walking or jogging 1 or 2 miles a day will have a huge impact on how you look and feel. I find mindless exercise boring, so I try to make it my mode of travel (hence, using the bike to go shopping). It seems to give the exercise "purpose".

Right now, I have no trouble maintaining where I'm at, though I've been plateaued for the past month or two, and need to either modify the diet a bit or up the exercise, as my goal is 190. I'm 6'1".

Not sure if this was the sort of response you were looking for, but I hope it was enjoyable to read! <grin>

Not only did I enjoy reading it, but it gave me some ideas for the same goal I have in mind. And yes losing the weight for ourselves should be the main reason. When you mentioned your pics and videos of your last trip, I looked at my pics on the laptop and gee good point. I am beyond motivated now and I love the bike idea, I live down the street from a shopping center Target,Trader Joe's and Costco although I can't really picture biking food from Costco all the way home. ( laughs out loud )

Yeah...pretty much anything from Costco could be a challenge! I found when I started doing this I stopped bulk (as I had to carry it home), but as a result, I actually saved money as I begin to really think about what I wanted vs what I needed. For example, I moved to a Pur filter and bottle, and stopped buying bottled water. A 3 pack of Pur filters is much easier to hike/bike home!

I take a lunch pack with those frozen "keep your lunch cold" things for fish or ice cream...but even so, it was amazing how after a few months, what seemed when I was solely car based as a *long* ride, when I really timed it and learned the back routes, etc, was only a 15 minute ride. About the same as if I drove there, counting traffic and lights.

Anyhow, glad you liked it. I know that sort of lifestyle doesn't work everywhere or for everyone, but I've enjoyed it. It has changed my life and I truly think a bit of exercise, nomatter how you get it, is certainly the best way to go.

Re: Getting in shape for the vacay

I think this thread is a FANTASTIC idea! I love the photos I take from our vacations, but since I gained weight again I never stood in front of the camera. I've been slowly regaining my health since last December, and am now a size 8 (down from a 14). I cannot say a lot about weight loss, since my prefered method of excercise is weight lifting, with yoga and running too, (I basically weight about 12 lbs less). My parents however have very sedentary jobs, and we only today decided (after talking about it forever) on dates for our family vacation next year.

Since we have been several times to WDW before, we know how demanding they can be on your feet, so we are going to develop a yoga and walking routine for them, I'll let you know how it goes!

    What is working for me:

1.- I live in a weather similar to Florida's so I'm used to drinking loads of water. I cut back on soda (it is freaky how much sugar I was drinking)

2.- Started going to sleep earlier and moving back my major meal to 4 pm, with a light snack before bed (if I don't have it I usually wake up midnight with a severe case of the munchies!)

3.- During weekdays (training days) I cut out alcohol completely. I allow myself maybe a glass of red wine on weekends

4.- lentils, broccoli, celery, apples, nuts, flax and bananas have become my new prefered snacks!

5.- Workout! I really love going to the gym, the hardest part for me is the food, but working out is so much fun! Yoga keeps me flexible and relaxed, weight training (no puny pink dumbbells for this girl, I fight the boys for the heavy ones!) keeps me strong and running keeps me exhilarated!

Find what works for you, and stick to it!

Being strong means enjoying the parks more, I think!

I definately want to get into shape for Disney. I've lost 25 lbs so far this year and hope to lose at least another 25 lbs before we go to Disney at the end of November. More importantly than that I want to be in better physical shape so that walking through the parks will be a breeze. I've been exercising and walking more and I plan to kick it up a notch by the end of the summer.

If you've dropped that much, keep up whatever you are doing. That's fantastic!

Bear in mind, at some point you will plateau. Whether it's diet or exercise. Weight is not the only indicator you should consider, but also look at overall happiness, sleep quality, and sheer energy.

My advice is, when you plateau, make minor adjustments to your lifestyle to continue the trend. Walk/jog 2 miles instead of 1. Drink more water and less sugary soda. I don't know your specific situation, so I really can't advise specifically, but it sounds like you've already found something that works for you!

Good luck! Hopefully this thread will give you some ideas and motivation.

Thanks, yeah my weightloss has stalled for a month or so, I need to get motivated again to keep losing. I loved your bike idea. I did that with walking on a smaller scale for awhile. I would walk to the store with my daughter whenever we weren't buying anything too heavy and I started walking to take/pick her up from school instead of driving.

I'm not getting in shape for Disney, I am getting in shape for the beach. I struggle to lose weight because of my thyroid issue, but I have made some changes recently and they have helped me already.
    1. I started paying attention to the amount of sugar in everything I even think about eating or drinking.
    2. Drinking more water
    3. Cut out soda, chips, cookies, and all other tasty treats.
    4. Workout at least 3 times a week
    5. Park far at the store so I can walk more
    6. Take the stairs as opposed to the elevator.
    7. Cut back on the amount of caffeine I consume.

I've only been doing it for 2 weeks and I'm down 5lbs, which is amazing for me.
