We were thinking of packing an ice chest on the plane, but didn't know if they would let you do that.
Then we thought of getting the towncar service but we have 16 of us traveling together.
So we will probably take the ME and maybe get a taxi to the grocery store if we can't send it as checked luggage. I know when I've traveled home from Hawaii - we packed food in an ice chest and it was ok. As long as they can look in and see what is in there and then seal it.
How much would a taxi to a nearby grocery store cost? Would they wait for you? is it pay by the minute?
Any advice?

Re: Bringing your own beer? Taxi to grocery store?
Better check laws for transporting alcohol across state lines. Had some buds get in trouble for that back in college.....It was a keg however. Also, taxi's are expensive out of the World.... There is a gas station on the grounds near the main entrance..

Re: Bringing your own beer? Taxi to grocery store?
I have another option. The Hess gas stations on the Disney Property sell beer at the regular and not resort prices.
I have not gone there for beer in the last two years, but I am betting the price will be better than getting a taxi and going to the local markets once you add the price and expenses.
I know you don't have a car , so here is another option. Take the bus to Downtown Disney. You can walk to the Hess station that is across the street from the DownTown parking lot. It is still a block or two to get across the lot, but considering the walking you will do at the parks , it is not bad at all.
I hope you get your answers.
See ya later.

You can get beer at any of the property hotels even though it is costly.... it wont be any cheaper at the Hess (maybe a little) and you still wont be able to buy more than a 6 or 8 pack at time....They dont sell like cases of beer... unless you get taxi's off property....

Re: Bringing your own beer? Taxi to grocery store?
Personally, I'd just bite the bullet and pay Disney prices.
If you're not at WDW long enough to be leaving the property, you surely won't have enough time to mess around getting cabs or getting to the Hess station (unless of course you're at DTD already).
The way I see it, you could have saved a fortune staying off property but elected to pay more for all the benefits of a Disney resort.
Having paid that extra money, the cost of a few Disney beers must surely be minimal in comparison?
And how many beers can you drink during one stay?
For me, the cost of the extra few dollars in buying Disney beer is worth the hassle saved in not getting off property to find cheap beer.

Re: Bringing your own beer? Taxi to grocery store?
Well I checked with TSA online and it says you can bring beverages purchased from outside the airline in your checked luggage. So this is an option. And probably better than hailing a taxi.
I know we'd drink more than a few but not cases and cases of it. lol.
Does anybody know what the imported beer costs at Disney? Maybe it's not all that expensive like I am thinking.
I'm just trying to go down there and spend the least as possible. Call me cheap! But with an entire softball team and their families, it's expensive anyway. I'm sort of the unofficial Disney expert and I feel obligated to help everyone save money. I enjoy helping people like that.
I'd rather go to Disney and stay on property because of the Disney benefits, but I don't want to spend a fortune. I'm just hoping that any little bit will help. I'm trying to find ways to cut costs and this is our first year to fly - so we won't have our vehicle this time.
And how much of a fortune could I have saved staying off property? Just out of curiosity - since we've never done that. I'd probably feel lost if I did though. lol

Honestly? Probably lots - have a look at places like the Best Westerns in Lake BV or Kissimmee - or even places like the Super 8 at Universal.
Having said that, I seriously think that the extra money you pay at Disney is well worth it for the extra service and benefits you receive - you get what you pay for!

You can't take an ice chest on the plane. We flew yesterday... and no "liquids" are allowed unless they are purchased once you pass through security. Plus, of course, you are limited in your carry ons - but ice isn't going to go through, and certainly not the "ice packs" - heck, I had trouble with a 2 oz tube of prescription sunscreen.
But, I wanted to add... I did notice an entire cooler full o' beer and spirits at the Pop Century food court. Beer is certainly available. Sorry, I didn't notice the prices though.

Re: Bringing your own beer? Taxi to grocery store?
Not sure if some of the members checked the beer prices at Hess.
The last I checked the prices were no higher than the supermarkets in Orlando. They also had packs in all sizes, but not 24 pack cases.
I found these prices much, much cheaper than the resort prices. Prices on milk, juices, sodas and snacks were much cheaper than the resorts also. They are not a full grocery store.
It may be worth checking out before paying the taxi , or delivery costs of traveling to the local markets.

Re: Bringing your own beer? Taxi to grocery store?
I had planned on bringing an ice chest without the ice or freezer packs but basically a hard case to transport unopened cases of beer. This can be checked luggage, as I know you cannot bring an ice chest as a carry-on. It wouldn't fit.
I have done this before with food, just not beer. We couldn't seal it up before the airport so that they bag checkers could look inside it. After they inspected it - they sealed it up and send it on it's way. Everything got home just as we had packed it. TSA website said beverages purchased outside the airport can be brought in checked luggage. I'm not sure about quantity limitations though.
And Winkster, I agree. I'd rather pay extra and not have to worry with driving to and from (and possibly getting lost and frustrated) and Disney's extras/benefits are well worth it.
cinderellamom12 - i did check with the local grocery store that you can have items delivered and alcohol is the only item that they cannot deliver. Go figure. I guess there are laws about that.
I just wanted to add a big thanks to everyone. I love this place. Everyone is so helpful.

Just an added note.. i agree pay the extra little amount but i dont think that imported beer is any different in prices... they hit hard equally for any beverage...lol

Re: Bringing your own beer? Taxi to grocery store?
i was on the roof of the hess station across from boardwalk today (i am in the roofing business). And they do sell beer (I needed one today) and since these stations are owned by hess they are the same prices as the ones next to my house.
As for prices at the resort, they are not that bad if you go to many other events like pro sports or concerts and consider what they charge. I always take some beers with me, if not just for convienance of having it in the room.
so I would bring some with me. I fly to a Nascar race every year with a cooler straped shut but no ice and I have never had a problem.
Good luck and Have fun.

Re: Bringing your own beer? Taxi to grocery store?
I bought a six pack of imported beer at the resort store last year and I think I paid about $16.00. This year I am thinking about packing a 12 pack in a hard sided suitcase this year. It was very nice to have a cold beer in the fridge when I wanted it.

Re: Bringing your own beer? Taxi to grocery store?
I have always taken an ice chest on plane. But, it had to be checked in. And yes you can pack your own liquor.
Last year I didn't have our ice chest, I brought back 6 bottles of wine from Virginia. I flew Southwest. They will not explode. They tend to break when packed in the soft side style luggage that most people have now. They may want to check the icechest at check-in. What I have done is take my roll of tape and tape lid shut after they looked at the beer, liquor, cokes, and snacks.
Another plus is as ice chest empties out it makes a great carrier for all the goodies you bring back.
