Re: Cheapest airfare
I agree. Also, Southwest doesn't charge extra for luggage, and allows two bags each! That's a pretty good deal, I think. Some airfare may seem cheap until you factor that in. SW also doesn't charge extra for changing your flight. This is our first time using them, and I am very happy so far.

I think AA is the cheapest IF you reserve early. They have more itineraries so they can give better prices BUT they have terrible service. After that it's southwest and spirit for red eyes.

Re: Cheapest airfare
My kid is a flight attendant with United, so usually we fly standby with them. Unfortunately, due to her limited seniority, we usually end up near the bottom of the standby list, so it takes us a while to get to Orlando. Last month, we ended up in O'Hare for hours and it wasn't looking good, so my wife booked us flights on Southwest Airlines using her cell phone. My wife accidentally bought 3 tickets for us, which we didn't realize until after we got home. We called Southwest and expected, at best, a travel voucher for the amount of the third ticket. The employee was terrific and walked us through the steps on their website to request a full refund. Three days later, the money was credited to our card. I can't say enough good things about Southwest. They seem to be one of the last big companies who still care about customer service. And the fact that they allow you to check 2 bags at no charge is a huge factor when deciding which airline actually has the lowest fare.

Re: Cheapest airfare
We just went in June, and played the airfare game for a long time before we actually purchased our tickets. This is what worked for me:
First, I have heard that Tuesday is usually the cheapest day to purchase tickets- I found that Wed is actually usually cheaper.
Second, I compared several sights every day for weeks before purchasing. Travelation is a good one- compares several at once, as well as the individual airline sights. I purchased our outbound and returning flights separatly. There was no price advantage to booking a RT flight. (Also had to do this for money reasons). We also flew out on Southwest and back on American- this just worked out much cheaper.
Third, The general rule is that the further out you purchase tickets, the cheaper. I also found this not true. Although I did purchase our return flight sooner(45 days out), I was able to find our outbound flight less than 30 days before our trip and only paid $75 each! (Southwest of course).
Good Luck! Hope you are able to find flights that work for you!!
