Re: Space Mountain, with the lights on!

Something I found on Space Mountain:

A new version of Space Mountain:
The plan as of right now is to close the attraction in January 2008 and reopen sometime between December 2008 and April 2009. It appears as though this will be a big draw for when it opens¦
The rumored changes are expansive, from new vehicles with on board audio system, to new effects never seen at any other incarnation of Space Mountain. The classic coaster will probably recieve a name change and a ton of publicity as part of the process. The new name will have a 2 in it, whether it be Mission 2 or just Space Mountain 2.0.

Re: Space Mountain, with the lights on!

I wonder if it will be more along the lines of the Disneyland Paris version?

I hope not - I love fast rides but thought that the DLP version was far too fierce.

Considering WDW already has the RnR Coaster (even though it is in a different park), I don't see the need for a more wild dark ride and I think it'd be a shame to see such a classic ride go.

I'm all for building newer, faster, more exciting rides but it does seem a shame for the older ones to go. I know they need to make room for newer stuff though - just a shame they can't expand outwards instead.

My ideal would be an outdoor super-coaster built on new land - surely there must be a new bit somewhere around the MK that they could build on?

And if they do close Space Mountain in January 2008 that'll mean I've ridden it for the last time - and I didn't even get to say goodbye! (sob, sob)

Re: Space Mountain Rumors - Closing?

Some More info:
Author: Jumboshrmp :: Posted:09 May 2006 4:30 pm

While still a rumor, it is very possible that Walt Disney World's Space Mountain will be going under a complete rehab, completely refurbished and rebuilt from scratch in 2007 or 2008.

While nothing has been officially announced by Disney, some Cast members are hinting that it will happen.

On CMI Radio Episode #3, host Mikey Silva interviewed WDW Cast Member "Ace", who works at Space Mountain, who said: "We're going to be going under refurbishment in 2007, in which they are actually going to rebuild the ride from scratch. They are going to put in a lot more futuristic elements, because this is an outdated roller coaster."

There are five Space Mountain's at various Disney Parks. Walt Disney World's Space Mountain was the first one, and is 31 years old. It is also the most dated. While a classic attraction, Space Mountain is rough, not very dark compared to the others, and quite behind in technology. Also, it is the only Space Mountain to not feature an on ride soundtrack. Recently, Disneyland's Space Mountain has been refurbished completely for the 50th Anniversary Happiest Celebration on Earth. Disneyland Paris's Space Mountain: De la terre ŕ la lune, has also been updated with new effects and a new soundtrack, as well as a new name, Space Mountain: Mission 2. Because all of the other Space Mountains have such a technological advantage over the original, many fans have been predicting that Walt Disney World would be the next to recieve a refurbishment.

Based on the changes that WDI (Walt Disney Imagineering) has made to the other Space Mountains, the the rumored upcoming refurbishment may include things such as new track (and possibly a new layout), new (and possibly re-designed) trains, an original on-ride soundtrack, and new special effects using the technology we have in 2007. Walt Disney World's original track layout most likely will not be replaced with the same layout that is shared by the Space Mountains in Anaheim, Paris and Tokyo, because their layouts were designed to fit in a building with a 200 ft. diameter. However, in the Florida version, Imagineers will have 300 ft to work with, allowing more spacious layout, or two separate tracks, the way it stands currently.

Re: Space Mountain Rumors - Closing, rehab, refurb?

I think if Disney did this, it is a much needed enhancement. The last time I went on Space Mountain at MK it seemed like the ride needed some TLC and updated technology. The fact that the ride has no audio system makes the ride seem less fun for me at least. Disneyland's updated Space Mountain is just amazing, and if they were to put something like that in, I'm sure people would be happy.

Re: Space Mountain Rumors - Closing, rehab, refurb?

ok, you gave me such a scare! Impossible as it may sound, I have many many warm and fond memories of Space mountain... Like the one of watching my small cousin (she was about nine or ten) all gung-ho to ride it (she and I were like a team that trip!) and her 12 year old finally overcomming her fear and riding it again with us (she had her eyes covered the whole time, though...)

Re: Space Mountain Rumors - Closing, rehab, refurb?

I have never been on this ride in all the times I have been to Disney. My kids rode it each time...I can't say why I didn't. I will have to ride the new ride, but won't have anything to compare it to.

Re: Space Mountain Rumors - Closing, rehab, refurb?

hey
i really would like this rumor to and not to be true. i do thing space mountain is very old but i think that they need to refurbish the ride. yeah it would take over a year. i dont think they would get rid of it because that is the next thing you see in magic kingdom when you are going in so it is kinda a landmark so i highly doubt that they would get rid of it

Re: Space Mountain Rumors - Closing, rehab, refurb?

I'm really torn on this one.

I've read all of the comments in favour of rebuilding from scratch and I agree with them all - it does need updating.

But then I think it will be such a shame to see the old ride go.

I used to be indecisive, now I'm just not sure!

Re: Space Mountain Rumors - Closing, rehab, refurb?

I rode it one time and one time only as I was to scared to even open my eyes and I was in my late 20's at the time. I would hate to see is go tho. I understand the need to update and keep things running at their peak. However I don't understand the need for it to be more scary, oh well things just keep changing no matter how much I wish some things could stay the same.

Re: Space Mountain Rumors - Closing, rehab, refurb?

I just got back from WDW last week and I have to admit that space mountain is outdated, however it's a classic. The ride was a bit to jerky and definitely could use a make-over. I just hope that the exterior doesn't change, and also I hope that they don't change the queus. That's one of the best parts!

Re: Space Mountain Rumors - Closing, rehab, refurb?

This was the first roller coaster my 9 year old son rode. He is very small for his age. When we were at MK 2 years ago, he was finally tall enough to ride one. He had a blast and we rode it 3 more times that day.
We are going down again in March and it would be nice to have it running so he could ride it again "for old times sake".

I'm sure the re-do would be worth while, but maybe they could wait until after Easter.

Re: Space Mountain Rumors - Closing, rehab, refurb?

WDW space mountian is one of my favorite rides. But I have to say that after riding it this weekend it is time of a refurb. I have been on both the SM in Disneyland and Disneyland Paris. Both are alot of fun and very diffrent. I have to say that my faith in Disneys ablity to do a great rehab that gives the old ride honor has been increased as of late (potc and hm). With that said I think a little thrill would be a good thing for MK which has not really had a thrill ride ever since 626 took over AE.

Re: Space Mountain Rumors - Closing, rehab, refurb?

a make over would be one thing but a complete change might not be needed for sure.... it is a classic
