I think you're right the topic has been brought up, but I'm not sure if it was if they rented them or if it was are walkie talkies better to use then cell phones. I believe we lost that thread, but I think the cell phones won. I know they sell the Mickey walkie talkies by Motorola.

I dont think they rent them at the parks but they are getting so inexpensive that buying them would probably be a better bargain. I saw a pair the other day for about $40.00 .

I have used my own walkie talkie's in the past years at
Disney Land. It was kind of funny the first time because I would
get strangers on the same channel that
I was on. I think some of them were park employees. But any way I still like to use walkie talkies.
The biggest problem with the walkie talkie is that it's TOO good of an idea, and everyone does it. This makes it difficult to find your people, no matter what channel you use. If you're going to do it, I'd recommend not using those plain, vanilla radios that you can buy at Costco or anywhere. You'll be listening to other conversations all day long otherwise. (Unless that's what you want to do!)

Cell phones can be hard to hear over the noise in the parks but normally all we need to do is take a few steps to find better reception. The walkie talkies have way to much interference with so many people on the same frequency. But I still want a set of Mickey Walkie Talkies!

I kinda like using my cell phone in the parks if not for anything other than the vibrate option so that I don't miss a call while somewhere I need to have the ringer shut off. I will say though that there are quite a few spots where I get zero reception. (I have T-Mobile).
There are some great new radios out there that you can get that have continuous tone coded squelch system (CTCSS, it's called PL by Motorola) or digital coded squelch (DCS). Think of it as sideband for FRS. By setting the channel and code on your units, you can stop other people from talking over you so long as they haven't set up their units the same way.
Depending on how often you will use them they can be a great investment.

I remember when we first got the walkie talkies, no one was using them yet and it was great...now...forget it.
we just got for the river some new ones that have a higher frequency range abd more channels. Apparently they have a greater distance in those channels too. They were more expensive than normal ones...but they work great! (less people on it too!)

We went with another family and did the walkie talkie route a few visits ago.
There weren't enough channels in the World. You couldn't get away from talking to strangers and people were yelling at each other to be heard.
Cells worked fine, but............
After half a day I was so sick of people walking with something on their ear, yelling into it, bumping into you, and just plain disturbing the MAGIC!!! that we put ours away.
We all survived for many many years by planning meeting sites and times. I wish they would ban them !! Or set up "Communication Spots" like they did "Smoking Spots" !!!
I feel better, thank you !

Yes..unfortunately they do. As much as they are tring to help the "smoking crowd"...It really adds a nasty atmosphere to the are that they set aside for it.
At DL, there are two areas I know of...One right next to Haunted Mansion (horrible...smoke wafts over to the queue and to the French market Place restaurant outdoor seating), and over by Big Thunder Ranch.
