The Mystical Forest
By: Jeffrey Costello
Hello my name is Jeffrey and I would like to tell you a story that I have not told anyone else in my lifetime. It all begins a long time ago in a far away land. A Queen and King longed to have a child of there own. Then one day the queen gave birth to a beautiful child and they named her Diana, for she was born on the first full moon of the year. Diana filled there life with joy and happiness until one day when the princess was walking the gardens of the castle she came across a broken part in the wall that led out to the forest beyond. Princess Diana of course was curious to see what lay in that forest since she was forbidden to go there. The princess then took the last brick that was in the way and made her way to the deep dark forest.
She started picking flowers when she came across a old wagon that read on the side “ Tales from the known, tales of the hidden” the princess did not know what this meant, but she walked further up to it. As she came up to it an old women came out of it. “Well hello dear, my name is Madam Shana, speaker of the forest and animals.” The princess in a soft voice said “Hello, I’m Princess Diana, I just love the forest and you must love it even more being that you spend so much time here.” The women laughed, “Child the forest is indeed beautiful and majestic, but there also lurks the evil that this forest hides behind its beautiful landscape, do not let looks deceive you, for they can hide the deepest secrets of the past.” The princess stared at her and said “Well I must leave now, I bet my parents are worried about me” “Just be careful dear, and stay on the path” Madam Shana said, with that the princess made her way back.
It was getting late and cold; the princess then spotted a most beautiful butterfly and tried to catch it. She did not even notice that she was well off the path. When she finally realized that she was not on the path she could not find her way back. Then a loud roar came from the bush, the princess then with no hesitation ran. She ran until she came to a small river where she saw a sign. The sign had moss and leaves all over it so she went up to it and brushed it off, it read: Here there, no where is thee, but the past is well in thy reach! The princess heard the thump of the thing that was coming after her so she plunged into the river and made her way to the end. As she crossed the river she looked back and did not see what the thing was that was chasing her the whole time.
Now it was dusk and Princess Diana was wishing that she never had gone into the forest. She walked for about an hour until saw a glow in the far end. She made her way to it, in hope that it was the king old women that talked to her before. As she looked from a distance she saw three old hags around a fire, dancing and chanting. She went up to the hags and said “Excuse me, my name is Diana. I am far away from my home and I need to get back on the path” The hags looked at her “Oh look at we got here sisters! Isn’t she a most beautiful child” said the eldest of the three. “Yes I do see, but sister, she looks awfully familiar” said an old hag. The princess just stood there not knowing what they were talking about. In the back of her mind she was still puzzling about what the past of this forest was, why did it make is so evil? “If you will I must get home, please tell me the way out of this forest” said the princess. The hags exclaimed “Child, it’s not that easy. Come over to the fire and warm you’re self up a bit” The princess went over to the fire and put her hand over it, warming her up. “Sisters I think that we must introduce ourselves, my name is Sarah. I’m the witch of the rivers of this forest. Over there is Gabriel, the witch of the trees, and the last of us is Marilyn, the oracle of the forest. Marilyn stood up “the path is in the distance, and it’s not too far. The evil in the forest is out; the blood must be repaid from far. Its cult, its wind, the hollows end. The roar of the sebar heard. The return of a descendent is here, never more, never far.” The 2 other sisters looked at each other. “I cannot tell you what that means child; you must figure it out on your own. Once you do you will see why you were never to go here, why you had an urge to come, and why you may never return” said the eldest. “Goodbye Princess Diana, and good luck” with that they disappeared like salt in water.
Diana stood in the clearing dazed and baffled. She still did not know where the path was nor did she understand all these riddles. She sat on a round rock near where the fire was. She pondered in her head about the riddles that were presented before her. She came to a conclusion that she must be the descendent of something that made the evil in this forest alive. Princess Diana needed to find out more clues before she came to a final conclusion. She made her way north (or at least she thought was north) to find the path. As she went deeper in the forest she could no longer see the moon and it was very dark. In a distance she could see a twinkling light, almost like a firefly. She chased after it, over rocks and puddles she came upon the twinkling light, it was a fairy. She came up to it, “Hello, I’m lost, cold and hungry. I must know where the path is in order to get home, please can you help me.” The fairy whispered in her hair “follow me!” the fairy then raced over the trees and under them until it came up to a enormous tree with a round hole high above. The tree stood there and on it was written, Dwelling of the fairies, good and bad take a glance if you have a chance. The fairy went into the round opening and came out with a group of fairies. “Seeing is believing, believing is seeing. Neither what you see nor what you hide from this forest came alive. Hide, hide if you must, but do use your instincts and all your trust. The path will not show, until these riddles are solved. After that shall you go home with a new knowledge and sound. Riddles, riddles are the game that you must win; a devils curse lies here within. Find a cavern old or new, a beast lies in a bed, the blood must be repaid anew” the fairies then went back into there home and the princess yet again was alone and confused.
She sat again and pondered. She thought about all the riddles and how they had the connection of the blood being repaid. She figured out that she would have to find where this beast was and had to kill it before it kills her, but there still was the question of the decedent. She knew it must be her, but who in her family would ever set a curse and a beast out in this forest? She started making her way to the only place that would possibly have caverns, the mountains of the glen. As she came up to a stream, the princess drinked some water and sat for a break. Staying there for a while she heard singing. It was a most beautiful voice, a voice that would make the birds ashamed of there morning song. It was coming up from a distance so the princess made her way by sound. She came up to a grotto in a gigantic river. She tried to look into it, but there was a door made of wood from an oak, hesitant she knocked on it. “Yes Diana, come in” said a voice from within. The princess was not at all surprised that this person already knew her name, she actually expected it. Wouldn’t you? Princess Diana made her way into the leaking grotto. The place was a polluted with bugs, water was dripping from the ceiling and rats scurried on the ground. The women that spoke before Dina was sitting on a chair not saying a word, but then a rush of win flew from the door and blew Diana into a steel confinement. The lady laughed and revealed herself as she took of her cloak. “Grandmother!” Diana screamed. “Yes it is I, your Grandmother. I who unleashed the evil in this forest and the monster that hides in the mountains!” “But why?” Diana asked. “Because of your father, him who married your mother and sent me to be a outcast in the woods since I did not approve of there marriage, but I swore that I would get my vengeance and I did. I sold my soul to Satan as long as he would unleash the evil in this forest when you stepped in it! The Sebar comes tonight and he comes for you! Once he kills you I will once again rule the Kingdome and everything will be mine!” the grandmother then vanished into the flames.
Diana was terrified; she went into the corner of the jail and wept. She wept so hard that the streams stopped, the wind did not blow, and the forest came to a halt. Then all of a sudden a light came into the grotto and appeared in human form. “Madam Shana!” Diana gasped. “No time for words Diana, you have quite a journey before you!” Madam Shana said as she put her hand over the lock and it came undone. “The Sebar is a fierce beast and you will need something to help you defeat it, here is a sword of truth. It will guide and protect you on your quest, now go there is no time!” Diana said her thanks and raced out of the grotto. She came up to the mountains of the Glen, and was nearer to the cave of the Sebar. Her grandmother saw this and was enraged “No, this can not be!” then she gathered atop of the mountain. “Rocks and storms will meet her doom, go and serve me well. Through the mountains I cast thy spell!” Then with a gasp of wind a storm brewed through the mountain, rocks grew making it almost impossible to get through, but the witches of the forest saw this and helped by whenever Diana stepped, the rocks cracked and fell apart. Diana raced up the mountain as lighting hit the ground everywhere, but she managed to dodge each one. She came upon the cave of the Sebar and stepped in. She went in and could feel its breath like the wind on a hot summer day. She saw it, the beast that lay in this cave. It was enormous, with fangs coming out and it had three eyes, but as she stepped near it woke up and roared, the monster hit Diana to the rock and she dropped her sword, but just then the good fairies of the forest came and put the monster to sleep. Princess Diana took back the sword and killed the monster by stabbing it in the head in its slumber. The princess was overjoyed that she finally could go back home, but then at the entrance of the cave her grandmother appear. “It’s not over yet, now you must deal with me Diana and all the powers of evil!” with that a powerful burst came and she turned into a five headed serpent that was bigger then the castles highest tower! The serpent snapped at Diana and her sword flew into the darkness of the cave. The serpent laughed, but Madam Shana appeared “Sword of truth do you magic, that evil die and good avail!” then the sword flew into the serpent’s heart and she tumbled off the cliff to the darkness below and died. Suddenly the whole forest came to life again. The trees grew back, the rivers flowed, the birds sang and the mountains became active with life once again.
“Thank you Madam Shana, I know not how to repay you” Princess Diana said as she hugged her. “I should thank you Diana, if you hadn’t stepped in the forest we may have never defeated the evil that kept this forest from its wonderfulness it once had” said Shana. “Madam Shana I do have one thing to ask you, could you please take me home? asked Diana. Madam Shana nodded and they set out on the path. Once Princess Diana came up to the gates of the castle she ran up the steps. Her parents heard of her arrival and went to hug her with all there love. They became once again a happy family and they all lived happily ever after
