Lightbulb A Resort on Castaway Cay? Think about it, its not as crazy as it sounds!

I was thinking a couple of days ago about how awesome it would be to put a resort hotel on Castaway Cay. The transportation idea of it would be close to a nightmare, well, maybe not. The people who are planning on visiting the resort would take a disney cruise ship to the differant ports of call, and then on the last day the ship would stop at Castaway Cay, the planned guests could then disembark and take their things and then move to the resort and into their room.

When the time comes for them to leave the resort they could then hitch a ride back to Florida on an income cruise ship. they then get to Cape Can. and fly home, yes, its a stretch I know but it would be like a peaceful vacation on a secluded island for a little while. Perhaps Disney could even built a slightly smaller ship , well, maybe not a ship but a larger yacht to exculusively transport the guests to and from Cape Can. The guests would spend one night on the yacht and arrive on Castaway Cay the following morning. The guests would then get off the yacht and go to the resort. They would stay at the resort for, 3,5,7 days, which ever they choose to book, then take the yacht back to Cape Can.

The resort would have to have everything, or maybe there would be two medium resort of differant themes instead of just one HUGE resort of one theme. But what kind of resort themes do you think would could do? I was thinking a Hawaiian/Caribbean Resort style and maybe a more fancy Grand Floridian/ Yacht/Beach Club sorta thing. I dunno, help me on that one!

But what do you think about it, do you think it would sink with Disney guests or would it be a great success?

I think to run a full time resort on castaway cay is hard to say. Right now they dont have people living on the island. Inorder to run a resort they would need employees(castmembers) living in the area to run and keep the place up. Right now only the crew members from disneys cruise ships come on and off the island running things.

Castaway Cay has 45 people living and hired to live and work for Disney who stay on the island year-round. But yeah, it would be a tough job to pull off. But with some careful planning and thinking, then it could happen.

O they do have castmembers living there? I was watching the travel channel the special about disneys cruise ships, and i thought they said that the cast memebers from the ship run the show on the island. I guess people living on the island keep castaway cay in tip top shape for when guest arrived.

LOL me too, i was watching the Travel Channel Special on it too! Well, I dunno then, i guess, I was just under the impression that Disney had the 45 people staying and living on the island. They did interview an "Island manager" so who knows they might have people on the island...they might not , now can anyone else help us with this? LOL

I think that would be an excellent Idea turn the 3 day cruise into a 7 night vacation you take your normal 3 night cruise then stay at the resort for the remaing 4 days when the wonder returns. That would be awesome being that is the best island by far

For those of you that have been there, think about it for a sec...

Do you really want to change that paradise into a destination for others? Can you imagine the slow erosion of the pristine beaches, due to constant use? And do you really want have other Cruise lines be able to port up there? Think about all the "non-family" focused groups that would come ashore, and treat the place like they own it.

Naw...I don't think that it would work. However, i am all for extended time at the island onboard the Dsney Cruise Line. A resort isn't needed, because you have a floating one right there! I would be in heaven if they would just spend one more day there!

Just the logistics of getting a resort here would make it very difficult if not impossible. The'd need major water desalinization plants and would need to bring in food from elsewhere.

But while we're dreaming, can we put a monorail on the island too?

No, no ,no, I don't mean letting other crusie lines dock there, maybe i wasn't clear enough, the resort would be exclusively Disney guests only. And if you don't remember, the island is constantly being used, there are Disney cast members there all the time and the cruise ships are there very often.

The resort would be small too it wouldn't be 1000 rooms, it would be smaller and more private. There would be a limit on the number of people who would be allowed to go to Castaway Cay resort so there wouldn't be large amount of of people on it. Maybe they could try something like having a "butler " or "waiter" for each family, just like on the crusie ships. The island would be under "environmental preservation so people would have to respect the island and not trash it. The resort would be small, very private and personalized.

Remember this idea is towards a small resort on the island, exclusively for Disney guests only no one else would be allowed ont he island, no other cruise lines, or ship docking at the Castaway Cay docking area but our prized Magic and Wonder.

Yeah, i t would be a difficult task, but with the tech we have today it wouldn't be a problem, and remember, we are talking about Disney here, they are leading in pretty much everything in technology. desalinization plants are on the cruise ships, how do you think they got them on there, if they can put them on a ship it should be in no way hard to get on onto an island. Food could be brought in on the cruise ships coming and going. Power could be made by Wind Powered or solar panels, very environment friendly.

And why the heck would you

I think it's a great idea - the resort should accomodate the same number of guests that the ships do - (due to keeping the ships full on the return) It wouldn't be hard to really do it right - you are right there is about 50 people that live and work on the island for Disney - Also since it is a Disney owned Island - it would not be accessible to other cruise lines (each cruise line has it's own private island) Disney could offer something that no one else could!

BUT, the big problem is that right now you don't need a passport to visit the Bahamas by boat - but if you docked at Castaway Key - you would have to deal with leaving the country - and that is where it gets difficult. You are no longer part of the ships registry you are now on international waters. I'm not sure of all the reprecussions but when I talked to a friend who is a part of TALC - they said it would be pretty difficult.

That being said - if Disney could pull it off - they would really have a corner on the cruise market.

I agree - I think a Grand Floridian type resort would be wonderful and then also a Caribbean Beach resort - they could still include the meals just like on the ship and alcohol could still be extra so there would be no questions when they priced it out! Port charges and taxes wouldn't change much, it would be just like doing a land and sea package that they offer now!

I think it's a great idea!

I think there could be a very upscale beach resort with the Caribbean Beach, The Polynesian resort, put in one, but make it really nice. Here is a proposed name Disney's Grand Bahamain resort & Spa, (do you think there should be a spa? Most luxury hotels have spas, so i think there should be one...) or the Grand Castaway Resort & Spa, Disney's Royal Palms Resort and Spa, put some other good names on the posts too, or maybe some differant themes, but it would probably make sence to try and keep withthe tropical theming considering the area the resort would be built on, an island.

I still don't think it would be right. The best thing about the cruise, was the stay at Castaway Cay. The biggest reason? the remoteness and the "purity' of it. Even if you were to put something as small as a bunch of bungalows...it would destroy the atmosphere of a "quiet little island".

To actually put in any form of a resort building...no way...Now you got something that you can get at other places...like St. Thomas, or St. Maarten.
