ABC Rearranges the Programming Deck Chairs: Changes on Monday, Thursday and Friday

Industry - Mediaweek.com
Fri Oct 11, 4:21 PM ET

In addition to ABC swinging the axe on new Friday drama That Was Then (hiatus is the official word they use), Push, Nevada will depart on Oct. 24, Monk will move to Monday at 8 p.m., and Drew Carey (news) and Whose Line is it Anyway? to the Friday 9 p.m. hour. Specials will air Thursdays at 9 p.m. until further notice.

Details, meanwhile, will be announced shortly on how Push, Nevada viewers (all three or four of them) can still win the cash prizes.

Here are ABC's three updated nights:

-Monday
8:00 p.m. Monk (effective Nov. 18)
9:00 p.m. Monday Night Football

-Thursday
8:00 p.m. Dinotopia
9:00 p.m. TBA
10:00 p.m. Primetime Thursday

-Friday
8:00 p.m. America's Funniest Home Videos
9:00 p.m. Drew Carey (effective Nov. 8)
9:30 p.m. Whose Line is it Anyway? (effective Nov. 8)
10:00 p.m. 20/20

-The Scoop a la ABC:

That Was Then was in a bad time period, Push, Nevada was a creative success and Drew Carey and Whose Line is it Anyway? were negatively impacted by clearance issues due to football on Monday.

-The Reality a la The Programming Insider:

That Was Then would have failed in any time period, Push, Nevada was an aggressive, albeit confusing programming maneuver, and the bloom was off the ratings for Drew Carey and Whose Line is it Anyway? two years ago. Don't expect anyone to follow the double dose of Drew to Friday. If there is one potential positive in the mix it's Monk, which is beginning to generate water-cooler buzz and could be a solid counter-programming maneuver to CBS comedies King of Queens and Yes, Dear, NBC's Fear Factor, Fox's Boston Public (news - Y! TV) and The WB's 7th Heaven.
