-Ratings Breakdown:
Although NBC, as expected, won its umpteenth Wednesday, the return of the 23 rejected women on The Bachelor (#2: 11.8/17) and the overrated Jennifer Lopez (news) on a special edition of Primetime at 10 p.m. (#2: 11.5/17) put ABC within only 17 percent of NBC. Biggest surprise of the night was NBC's Ed at a season high 9.3/13 at 8 p.m. - 11 percent above CBS's second place (and older skewing) 60 Minutes II (8.4/12). ABC also had some crowing rights at 8 p.m. with the durable My Wife and Kids (8.7/13) tied with the first half-hour of Ed followed by George Lopez at a 7.5/11.
Also at 8 p.m. Fox's combination of Bernie Mac (news) (6.2/ 9) and Cedric the Entertainer Presents (5.8/ 8) remain consistent, albeit non-spectacular, followed by UPN's Enterprise (4.5/ 7) and the WB's tired Dawson's Creek (news - Y! TV) (4.1/ 6).
At 9 p.m., although NBC's West Wing (12.9/18) ranked first in the hour based on the overnights, ABC's aforementioned The Bachelor will grab the adult 18-49 gold once the nationals are released. Less impressive remains CBS's Amazing Race 3 (5.5/ 8) followed by Fox's Fastlane (4.5/ 6), the WB's Birds of Prey (series low 3.7/ 5) and UPN's The Twilight Zone (3.0/ 4). For the first time, Birds of Prey did not hold its Dawson's Creek lead-in, not a good sign with a full season renewal still pending.
Opposite the number one rated show for the night, NBC's Law and Order (15.5/24), and the aforementioned Primetime with Jennifer Lopez, CBS's Presidio Med sunk to a series low 4.5/ 7 at 10 p.m. As for J.Lo and fiancÈ Ben Affleck (news), what on earth is the big production?
