I was hoping someone could clear this up for me. When you go to buy a Vinylmation from D-Street, can you pick the one you want or are they closed all up in the box and it is a mystery as to which one you get? I ask because I bought a Goofy Vinylmation off Ebay and the box it came in was opened. But the package had nothing to do with Goofy. It just shows 12 different vinylmations on the back cover. So is this a "grab bag" kind of thing or can my wife go buy a 3" Pluto Vinylmation when she gets to DTD?

While they may have a grab-bag section, I did not see it.
D-Street has the largest selection and decorating area of the parks, although the vinymation figurines are sold almost everywhere at WDW, even the resorts.
Most come in packaging that has a clear plastic front to see the figure you are buying

Okay. Thanks. I was a little worried there. The box for this one has no plastic front (it is a genuine Vinylmation box) and it seemed like a pack of baseball cards. You never know what is going to be in the package. I was hoping they were not all like that. My son really wants the Tower of Terror one and my daughter wants the Donald one.
The small 3" vinylmation characters that belong to the Urban, clear or park series come in a solid box, no window, the vinylmation character inside is in a sealed opaque bag. you can not see what you get. It is a Mystery or grab bag like situation. People sell open ones on ebay because they get duplicates. Nothing to worry about, you are getting a genuine. The only way to ensure you get one of the entire series without duplicates, is to by the entire sealed display box of 24 pieces that runs about $240. this ensures you get 2 full sets, however.... you still will not know which piece in the series is in which box.
The larger one that is 9" and a newer series called "big eyes" are considered open edition series. There is a window on the box so you can see what you are buying. these are about $15 a piece where the other is about $10. I happen to think the big eyes are really cute! Goofydad you have the big eyes version on your FB page. It does not seem like they are bagged inside the box. The disney website has a vinylmation page with some cool info on it.
Hope this helps!

I was afraid of that. Looks like I'll be buying mine off Ebay. That is a pretty stupid thing for them to do. Why on earth would you make a kid pay $10 of his/her hard earned Disney spending money on an item that may turn out to not even be the one they want? Wow Disney....
Oh, I knew I had a genuine Vinylmation. I was just curious about why it had no plastic window so I could see which one it was if I were buying it in a store.
Not all of the Big Eye's are 9" My wife has a Big Eye's Pluto and it is 3". And the Goofy on my FB page is actually a regular 3" and not a Big Eye's edition. It is the same as the one I got from Ebay. I really didn't like the Big Eye's one of Goofy.
I am sorry for the wrong info G00fyDad, I never saw the closed packages.
I did see the clear ones at almost any of the stores.
I hope you get the one you want.

I have seen these things all over WDW. Can someone please explain to me the appeal of vinylmation? I don't get it. What is it all about? Why has it taken over so much space at WDW stores?

Vinylmation is much like pin trading however trading is either totally mystery or visible. They are traded in stores not CMs. And you can only trade ONE per location. Hope this helps.
Oh and they are 10 bucks but the 9" are 39.95

Thanks SBW!
So do all you guys trade them or just collect them?
And do you decorate your own or buy them ready done?
Are stores obliged to trade? I mean what if I'd decorated my own? I'm RUBBISH at art - would they still trade mine for a professional one?
I've only ever seen them for sale in a few stores - I had no idea you could trade them too.

Thanks for this information. Seriously, I hate it when I don't know which one I'm getting. But, one day, I saw one I really liked, I grabbed one and pick at random. "No way it's going to be- OH MY GOSH!" And I got it . There's a little Disney magic for you.

Actually they don't trade anything but the official 3"s You can paint your own on a diy vinylmation (I will to make Monorail Mark 7) but you can not trade them. My brother trades them but once I get something I want I KEEP IT such as my monorail blue and green. Oh and my donald duck mini, those ones are a bargain because most likely you get something you want (but no trading) hope this helps

They started as a fun collectable to use a traditional icon in this case the Mouse as canvas. The artists can then think of a former icon in a playful and unstructured way. The concept of them is not new and they are often found in Japanese culture, craft stores, and in Pop Surrealism. It is wonderfully fun and challenging to paint on such round surfaces! Kidrobot sells blanks as does roseart but not Disney related.
