Reviewer's Comments

Sanaa is located in the level below the lobby of AKL - Kidani Village. It's a quaint and cozy space, definitely not the same size as Boma or Jiko over in Jambo House. When you first walk in, you enter the bar and lounge area. Apparently, you are only allowed to sit there if you have a reservation for dinner. No casual drinks or small plates are served here.

The main dining room is rather small, as noted earlier. The drawing point of it is the floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over the savanna. The animals come much closer to the windows here than anywhere else in the resort. There is maybe 6 - 10 feet distance from the window to the edge of the savanna.

The food is very good. I had the sustainable fish, wrapped in banana leaves, with a pickled lime and ginger sauce and a side of rice. The fish this particular night was haddock. The piece seemed a bit small at first and was very plainly cooked. This was actually a good thing because the sauce, which was in a separate pitcher, was so flavorful, any additional seasonings on the fish would have taken away from it. In fact, it was so good, I poured what was left over my rice. YUM! The fish itself was tender, flaky, and very moist. I would definitely order this again.

For dessert, I tried the sampler. This included a no-sugar added mango pudding, cardamom-butter cake, and eggless chocolate cake. The mango pudding absolutely didn't need any sugar. It was sweet and had a very strong mango taste. Almost too much for me, but I'm not a big fan of mango. The chocolate cake was dense and rich. The best of the desserts, however, was the cardamom-butter cake. Flaky layers of pastry with an orange sauce over it - delicious!

The wine list has some interesting choices. While not as extensive as Jiko's list, it offers a good range of prices and variety. Out of curiousity, I tried an Indian wine, but didn't enjoy it.

I will certainly be going here again. If you decide to try it, ask for one of the window seats. I didn't get one of these, but it didn't stop me from absolutely freezing when I looked up from my meal and saw a family of 4 giraffes having their own dinner not far from the restaurant windows. Amazing.
