Meet Moana, the Next Disney Princess – Hawaiian native Auli’i Cravalho

How would you react if you found out you’d just been cast in the next Walt Disney Animation Studios feature film? Fourteen-year-old Auli’i Cravalho was chosen from hundreds of actors to play the title character in Moana, coming to theaters November 2016, and she learned about her casting during a live callback with Ron Clements and John Musker (Moana directors and keepers of our childhoods)! Auli’i had no idea she had been cast. Watch the directors play a sneaky trick on her to surprise her with the good news:

Auli’i’s reaction, and her mom’s, is so priceless! We’re so happy for her and can’t wait to see her as Moana!

In an interview with People Magazine, Cravahlo said it’s a dream come true to finally be able to play a Disney princess. Something, she said, she’s wanted to do since she was a baby.

“Moana is such an amazing character. She’s brave, she is so empowered, she knows what she wants and she’s not afraid to get it, and I think that’s something that I can relate to as well,”

Walt Disney Animation Studios has also released new imagery from the film! Take a look:

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast South Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped — and no one today knows why.

From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated adventure about a spirited teenager who sails out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and fulfill her ancestors’ unfinished quest. During her journey, she meets the once-mighty demi-god Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), and together, they traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous fiery creatures and impossible odds.
