But fans have been chasing an elusive dream…a “real” replica lightsaber with a light-up blade that can extend and retract. That kind of lightsaber hasn’t existed in a viable, commercially available form…
…UNTIL RECENTLY. Since yesterday was May the 4th, aka Star Wars Day, Disney Parks released this short video unveiling their new replica lightsaber, which actually has an extendable and retractable light-up blade!
If the video is to be trusted (there might be some effects in place to make it look better, after all), this new lightsaber is about as realistic as we’re going to get without actually making the real thing:
Patents for the new lightsaber reveal that it works similarly to a tape measure, with two strips of plastic semi-cylinders that coil up in the handle and can unroll to form a blade, which is then lit up with a strip of LED lights.
The bad news is you’ll have to wait until at least next year to buy one. Disney noted that guests on the Galactic Starcruiser (a sort of immersive Star Wars–themed hotel experience) will be the first to see the new lightsaber, and the Starcruiser’s debut has been pushed to 2022.
Disney has also not clearly stated when (or even IF) these lightsaber will be for sale, so we might have to wait even longer than that.
So, for now, we’ll just have to keep dreaming…and waving around our $300 lightsaber replicas with attached blades. Hey, it’s not nothing!
