Sunday marked the end of an era for two popular Disney World rides. The Great Movie Ride and Ellen’s Energy Adventure, two classic Walt Disney World rides, closed for good on Sunday.
The first to close was Ellen’s Energy Adventure at Epcot. The current version of the show, starring Ellen DeGeneres and Bill Nye, began running in 1996 and has entertained guests since then with its life-size dinosaurs. The ride will be replaced by a Guardians of the Galaxy attraction. The ride is something thrill-seekers might be excited about, as insiders have said that it may become a roller coaster.
Work on the project is expected to begin as early as next week. Wait times for the ride weren’t too lengthy on Sunday.
The wait to ride the Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios was much longer, with many people waiting almost two hours to ride it one more time. Since 1989, the ride has taken guests inside “The Wizard of Oz,” “Tarzan,” “Casablanca,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and other films.
The Great Movie Ride will be replaced by the first Mickey and Minnie ride. The ride, which company officials described as “groundbreaking” will be Disney’s first ride based on Mickey Mouse. Disney said the “mousterpiece” will be a “2 and a half-dimension” ride and will allow park visitors to step inside the world of a modern Mickey Mouse Cartoon short, as seen on the Disney Channel.
Disney announced last month that the rides would be replaced by the new attractions. Since then, commemorative souvenirs such as T-shirts and mugs have been available for sale in the parks.
Disney officials said they sometimes offer unique items to “commemorate special moments in our parks.”
