What’s coming up at Disney World
Need a cheat sheet for your next theme-park dinner party? (It’s a thing. Really.) Here are talking points that grew out of last week’s D23 Expo, where it was made official that lands dedicated to “Star Wars” and “Toy Story” are coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
•Goodbye, Avatarland. The under-construction land at Disney’s Animal Kingdom shall officially be known as Pandora — The World of Avatar. Its big Banshee-driven attraction will be called Avatar Flight of Passage. But, gee, Avatarland was fun to say.
•I’ll be your skipper today. Magic Kingdom is getting a Jungle Cruise-inspired restaurant called Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen, set to open this year.
•Now we’re flying. Soarin’ Around the World, a new version of the popular Epcot attraction, will debut next year.
•Force field. Before the full-blown Star Wars land opens, there will be fresh intergalactic offerings at Hollywood Studios. Star Tours will add locations and characters from the upcoming “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” this year, and a new fireworks show for a new Season of the Force event debuts early next year.
•What time is it? Notably absent: Opening dates for the bulk of the Star Wars and Toy Story lands. It’s not surprising. Perhaps execs are wearing of the “Why is it taking so loooooooooooooooooong?” rants regarding Avatarland, er, Pandora, which is slated to debut in 2017. Although someone in the hierarchy certainly has a goal; there’s a lot going on, including twin Star Wars attractions in California. Disney has two words for us: Stay tuned.
